No itinerary is complete without a journey along the Cape Peninsula, a slender stretch of land brimming with wonders. While Cape Town undoubtedly garners attention as a must-visit destination, many travelers overlook the incredible experiences that await beyond the city limits in the Western Cape Province. To put its size into perspective, the province spans approximately 130,000 square kilometers—comparable to that of the whole of England. However, with a population of just under 8 million residents, this is equal to only one-seventh of England’s 57 million inhabitants! This means that visitors can immerse themselves in the stunning, less-crowded landscapes, featuring diverse mountains and breathtaking scenery that make this province truly spectacular. To help you explore the richness of the Western Cape, we’ve divided its highlights into three distinct segments.

The below options are the suggested 4-night extensions following a 3-night stay in the Mother city that make up this incredible 7 night package and can easily be mixed and matched to suit your own choices.

Option A – West Coast and Cedarberg Meander

(Following 3 nights in Cape Town)

In addition to Cape Town, this holiday option introduces you to the spectacular and often overlooked West Coast region. The Cederberg mountains are noted for their dramatic, wind-carved sandstone formations, such as the Maltese Cross and the Wolfberg Arch, as well as San rock paintings. The Cederberg Wilderness Area is known for its abundant spring flowers and fertile valleys in the surrounding dry landscape, as well as a rugged mountainous landscape.

Between August and October each year, the sunbaked plains and sandstone mountains of the West Coast emerge into a kaleidoscope of brilliant colour as the countryside gives rise to the world-renowned wildflowers. The West Coast is blessed with stark natural beauty. The quaint fishing village of Paternoster famed for its picturesque wooden fishing boats scattered along the shoreline and home to the Cape Columbine Lighthouse and nature reserve is a must for those looking to sit back and relax.

Option B : Breede Vally and Klein Karoo Explorer

(Following 3 nights in Cape Town)

There really is no adjective apt enough to describe the beauty of the Breede River Valley. The valley is littered with wine producing vines and The Robertson Wine Route is possibly the most beautiful Wine Route in South Africa.

There is no better way of sampling the many wines than to enjoy a relaxed and unique steam-hauled trip through the stunning vineyards and open veld of the Breede River and Langeberg Valley, both forming the Cape Central Valley. Your train journey through the Winelands begins and ends at the Robertson Railway Station.

The Klein Karoo Region (home to Route 62, the longest wine, mountain and fruit route in the world) has a landscape fashioned almost entirely by water, ranging from lush greenery in the fertile river valleys to short, rugged Karoo plants in the veld. Gorges follow rivers that cut through towering mountains and pass cross-imposing terrain, of stunning magnificence. The long narrow valley is rich in geological shapes, culture, history, Bushman art, prolific plant species and is also the home of the spectacular Cango Caves as well as the largest bird in the world – the ostrich.

Option C – The Winelands and Whales spectacular

(Following 3 nights in Cape Town)

This offers breath-taking scenery, historic homesteads, superb restaurants and of course, copious quantities of fabulous wine routes and a 300-year history. The Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on hop-off tour is one of the best ways to discover the true essence of the Franschhoek Valley

Walker Bay, in the heart of the Whale Route has developed from a rustic whaling and fishing region into one of the world’s best whale-viewing sites. Each year, Southern Right whales migrate into the calm waters of Walker Bay to calve and nurse their young. The whales, often merely metres from the shore, provide unsurpassed whale watching opportunities between June and November. Humpbacks migrate through the region between May and December each year, while Bryde whales are found slightly further offshore all year round.
